Le Maroc c'est l'Afrique

As a Nigerian native raised in America, I have always been fascinated by the rich cultural heritage of Naija as well as other African countries and have a deep love for traveling to new and exciting places. Recently, I took a VERY unplanned spur-of-the-moment trip to Marrakech, Morocco from my home in Atlanta, with an all too brief layover in Paris. Little did I know that this trip would turn out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Upon arrival in Marrakech, I was struck by the gorgeous architecture of the airport, the familiarity of the taxi bullpen, and French and Arabic speaking Muslim people that surrounded me. Despite having no real plan for my time in the city, I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation as I set out to explore all that Marrakech had to offer. I also had the good sense to know - whatever price you're quoted - divide by 3 and don't budge.

One of the highlights of my trip was the opportunity to connect with my favorite cousin, Jade, who had been meant to be a bridesmaid in my wedding and had also designed and made all of my wedding dresses but circumstances prevented that. We spent our time exploring the city center, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling markets, talking, laughing, taking photos and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

As luck would have it, we also met a newfound (fellow Naija!) friend who offered to guide us through the city, showing us hidden gems and secret spots that we never would have found on our own. We spent hours wandering through the narrow streets, taking in the local culture and immersing ourselves in the rich history of Marrakech.

Another highlight of our trip was our visit to the Yves Saint Laurent museum and its adjoining garden. The museum showcased the designer's iconic fashion pieces, along with a wealth of information about his life and career. The garden, with its stunning array of exotic plants and breathtaking views, provided the perfect backdrop for a relaxing afternoon spent soaking up the sunshine and taking in the beauty of the city. The gardens also provided the ultimate backdrop for the most stunning selfies.

Our dining experiences in Marrakech were also unforgettable, thanks to the all-inclusive adults-only resort that we had secured through her travel planner in Nigeria. We enjoyed a range of delicious local delicacies, from tagines and couscous to freshly baked bread and sweet pastries. The food was a true reflection of the city's rich cultural heritage and was a highlight of our trip - it was also our gateway to shenanigans for one reason or another.

All in all, my spur-of-the-moment trip to Marrakech was an unforgettable experience that I will always cherish. From the vibrant colors and bustling markets to the stunning architecture and rich cultural heritage, Marrakech is a city that truly captures the spirit of adventure and exploration. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or just starting out on your journey, I would highly recommend a visit to this magical city – you won't regret it. May I suggest planning a few more details and exploring a little further - a train to another city, a trip to the mountains; make it an adventure!
